A Retreat for Men

It’s no secret that most of the faithful who occupy the pews on Sunday and the seats at Wednesday night Bible study are women.  Why are so many men turned off by Church? Why must so many women attend church without their husbands?  Why would a group of guys be more interested in playing golf than meeting the God who holds them existence?

This year’s Marygrove retreat for men... will explore the retreat of men from the life and ministry of our churches.   We’ll examine why so many men don’t bother to go to church, and why many men who go to church are so bored, uneasy and passive.  History is filled with examples of society changing for the better when men go back to church.   So Men of God, this is your call.  Come on Bubba... get off the couch and into the pew!

There’s an old saying:

What’s missing from ch_ _ ch?  U-R!

When drivers spot this cliché on a church reader board, it makes a compelling point.  But it’s probably more accurate to say

What’s missing from church?  Men are!

It’s no secret that most of the faithful who occupy the pews on Sunday and the seats at Wednesday night Bible study are women.  Why are so many men turned off by Church? Why must so many women attend Mass without their husbands?  Why would a group of guys be more interested in playing golf than meeting the God who holds them existence?

This year’s Marygrove retreat for men... will explore the retreat of men from the life and ministry of our Church.   We’ll examine why so many men don’t bother to go to Mass, and why many men who go to church are so bored, uneasy and passive.  This retreat will not only name the problems, it will also suggest encouraging and effective ways for making church a place where both men and women feel at home, where they are excited and enthused about being Christian, and where they can be challenged to be their best.  This retreat is for any man who has ever wondered: what’s wrong with me?  Why can’t I pay attention at church?  How come I’m not inspired by the Gospel?  Why do I always plan my Sunday around the early NFL game on Fox rather than the early service at my church?

History is filled with examples of society changing for the better when men go back to church.   So Men of God, this is your call.  Come on Bubba... get off the couch and into the pew!
